Solidaridad embraces the public-private partnerships in order to test innovations, speeding up change and taking success to scale. Globally, Solidaridad works across 13 commodities / sectors. Gold is one of them.

BACKGROUND of Going for Gold Programme

Going for Gold (GfG) is a 5-year programme being implemented by 3 international CSOs - Simavi, Solidaridad and Healthy Entrepreneurs - working towards economic empowerment of women living in and around artisanal and small-scale gold mines (ASGM) in Ghana and Tanzania. Women working in mines face discrimination at multiple levels. Men control and benefit from most resources – access to land for mining, incomes, credit, mining and household commodities – thus limiting women’s opportunities for economic and social development. The responsibility to have (and care for) children, limited access to health services and prevailing sociocultural norms further prevent women benefitting from mining and other economic activities. Beyond the mines, women’s opportunities to engage in economic activity and improve their status are affected by their limited access to health care, contraception and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education.

For the next 4 years we will be working in carefully selected gold mining communities in Geita District, Tanzania, to improve working conditions for women within gold mines. We will also be working closely with communities and women outside the gold mines to improve women’s status and abilities to engage in economic activities,, increase their SRHR knowledge and create an environment in which communities, health workers and authorities recognize women’s health rights.

The Position

Reporting to the Regional Program Manager, the Programme Officer will be responsible for ensuring that mining associations are trained and implement fair and safe mining practices, with a special focus on creating equal opportunities, rights and safety for women and girls. Additionally, he/she will engage with policymakers to improve the representation of women in the mining economy and related policy.

Roles and Responsibilities:
• Set up women clusters to facilitate training;
• Profile the best mining practices and technologies used by the groups and identify needs and training gaps within the groups through Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and other methodologies;

• Conduct actual training to the women clusters as per the curriculumand training needs identified. Further, introduce appropriate mining techniques for improved safety and efficiency within the mining groups;
• Working closely with the respective mining groups, identify and democratically elect lead miners who would be mobilizing the larger communities. The lead miners would be trained further and integrated int the trainings as assistants or co-trainers and will continue training post project period;
• Support building of partnerships between the participating mining groups, the government and the private sector;
• Support peer-to-peer learning among the mining groups/women clusters;
• Monitoring project schedules and budgets, preparing progress reports, and liaising with key stakeholders;
• Prepare regular project reports and assist the project evaluation process;
